Mythology
A mythology offers a framework from which to perceive meaning within the mundane.
We all have mythologies. The Grace Plan is about using them intentionally to get closer to God.
Reflections:
- Can a non-religious person have an experience with God?
- Can a religious person have a disconnection from God?
- If a mythology is a set of symbols (something that represents something) and practices, what are some aspects of your personal mythology?
- What is an example of a spiritual symbol?
- What is an example of a spiritual practice?
- Does every church have the same spiritual practices?
- Does the concept of a personal mythology make sense to you?
- Can you have a religious faith, attend church, and also have a personal mythology based on the teachings of the church?
- Can a set of personal practices and symbols be useful while not being true? For example, are there things in the church setting that are not in the Bible that still hold meaning?
- Can different members of the same church focus on different symbols individually?
- Can a non-religious person have a meaningful and useful personal mythology that includes God?
- Can a church member have a personal practice that doesn’t help them spiritually?
- Can symbols and practices be used to make someone spiritually sick (further from God)?
- How do we know if a symbol or practice is bringing us closer to or further from God?
